What Is a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)?

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is a secure electronic key issued by a licensed Certifying Authority that proves your identity online. It works exactly like a handwritten signature or a company seal, but it is used to sign electronic documents and online forms. A DSC is mandatory for filing on the MCA company registration portal, uploading returns during GST filing, signing income tax forms, submitting trademark applications online, bidding on government tender portals, and completing customs documentation on ICEGATE.

At SetupFiling.in, we issue Class 3 DSC — the highest security class recognised by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) — for individuals, company directors, proprietors, LLPs, trusts and import-export businesses across India.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate used for?

A Class 3 DSC is the highest assurance level of digital signature and is used for MCA e-filing, GST returns, income tax e-verification, trademark applications, e-tendering on GeM and CPPP, and DGFT/ICEGATE customs filings.

How long does it take to get a Digital Signature Certificate?

An Individual or Director DSC is typically issued within 24 hours after PAN, Aadhaar and video verification are completed. An Organisation DSC may take 24 to 48 hours as it requires additional entity documents.

What documents are required to apply for a DSC?

You need a PAN card, Aadhaar card, a recent passport-size photograph and a valid mobile number linked to Aadhaar for OTP or video based eKYC verification.

What is the validity of a Digital Signature Certificate?

DSCs are issued for 1 year or 2 years depending on the plan you choose. You must renew the certificate before expiry to continue filing on government portals without interruption.

How much amount is GST free?

In India, businesses with an annual aggregate turnover below the following limits are exempt from mandatory GST registration and thus effectively “GST free”:

  • Up to ₹40 lakh/year — for businesses in goods (regular states)
  • Up to ₹20 lakh/year — for service providers (regular states)
  • Up to ₹20 lakh/year — for goods in special category states
  • Up to ₹10 lakh/year — for services in special category states

Certain goods and services are also fully exempt from GST irrespective of turnover — such as fresh vegetables, milk, curd, eggs, education services, healthcare services, etc. These are listed under the GST exemption schedule.

Small businesses below the threshold can also opt for the Composition Scheme, paying a reduced flat-rate tax (1%–6%) instead of regular GST.

Do I need a separate DSC for GST, Income Tax and MCA filing?

No, a single Class 3 Individual or Organisation DSC can be used across MCA, GST, income tax and trademark portals, as long as it is registered on each portal separately.

What is the difference between Individual DSC and Organisation DSC?

An Individual DSC is issued in a person’s name using PAN and Aadhaar, while an Organisation DSC is issued in the entity’s name with the applicant listed as an authorised signatory, along with company or LLP documents.

Is a DGFT DSC different from a regular Digital Signature Certificate?

Yes, a DGFT DSC is a specialised Class 3 Organisation or Individual DSC configured for use on the DGFT portal and ICEGATE, and it is mandatory for import-export businesses filing shipping bills and IEC updates.

Can I get a Digital Signature Certificate without visiting an office?

Yes, the entire DSC application process is completed online through document upload and video-based eKYC, and the USB token is delivered directly to your address.

What happens if my USB token is lost or damaged?

You can apply for a fresh DSC on a new USB token. It is recommended to keep your token in a safe place and never share its PIN with anyone.
