1. Choose the Right Business Structure
Before you register your salon business in India, decide how you want to run your business. Some common structures are:
- Sole Proprietorship: For small salons owned by one person.
- Partnership Firm: If you have a partner.
- Limited Liability Partnership (LLP): Gives legal protection to partners.
- Private Limited Company: Best for big salons with more investment.
Your choice will affect the registration process, tax filing, and other legal aspects.
2. Pick a Unique Name for Your Salon
Choose a unique and catchy name for your salon business. The name should not be similar to any existing company or trademark. You can check the availability of the name on the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) website.
3. Get a Business Registration Certificate
Depending on the structure you choose, you need to register your salon business:
- Sole Proprietorship: Apply for GST Registration and local municipal trade license.
- Partnership Firm: Register under the Indian Partnership Act, 1932.
- LLP: Register with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) by filing Form FiLLiP.
- Private Limited Company: Register with MCA using SPICe+ form.
All these registrations can be done online through the MCA portal.
4. Apply for GST Registration
If your salon’s annual turnover is more than ₹20 lakhs (or ₹10 lakhs in some states), GST Registration is mandatory.
You can apply for GST registration on the GST portal . It helps you legally charge GST on services and get input tax credits.
5. Get a Trade License from the Local Municipal Corporation
Every salon must have a Trade License issued by the local municipal authority or city corporation. This license confirms that your business follows local rules related to hygiene, safety, and location.
6. Apply for a Shop and Establishment License
This license is issued by the Labour Department of your state. It is mandatory for any commercial establishment. It helps in managing employee rights and working hours.
7. Health and Safety Licenses
Some states may also require a health license or sanitation license from the local health department. This ensures your salon follows hygiene standards, especially if you offer services like haircuts, facials, waxing, or spa treatments.
8. Fire Safety Certificate
If your salon is in a large commercial building, a fire safety certificate from the Fire Department may be needed. This shows that your salon is prepared for fire emergencies.
9. Professional Tax Registration
Some states require businesses to pay professional tax. If applicable in your state, you need to register for it and deduct it from employees’ salaries.
10. Trademark Registration (Optional but Recommended)
If you want to protect your salon’s name, logo, or tagline, consider applying for trademark registration. This prevents others from using your brand identity.
