Is GST Registration Required for Poultry Farming?

Short answer: not if you deal only in exempt goods. Live poultry and fresh eggs are generally exempt from GST, and a person who supplies only exempt goods or services is not liable to register under Section 23 of the CGST Act. Registration becomes necessary when you also make taxable supplies above the threshold or fall under a mandatory category, such as selling through certain e-commerce routes. Exemptions are notified by the GST Council and can change, so confirm them for your products.

Many poultry farmers assume the "agriculturist" exemption protects them. That exemption covers produce from cultivation of land, and rearing birds is not cultivation of land. A poultry farm is protected because of what it sells, not because of who the farmer is. That is why the answer changes as soon as your product mix changes.

GST Treatment of Common Poultry Products

What you supplyUsual GST positionRegistration impact
Live birds and day-old chicksGenerally exemptNo registration needed on this alone.
Fresh table eggsGenerally exemptNo registration needed on this alone.
Contract rearing of birds for an integratorGenerally treated as an exempt agricultural serviceUsually not required on this alone.
Fresh or chilled dressed meatGenerally exemptCheck labelling and packing rules.
Frozen, processed or branded and packaged productsMay be taxableRegistration may be needed above the threshold.
Trading in feed, medicines or equipmentRate depends on the itemTaxable sales above the threshold need registration.
Selling poultry litter or manureMay be taxableCounts as a taxable supply.

Important: once you make taxable supplies, your exempt sales also count towards the aggregate turnover used for the ₹40 lakh goods limit. A farm with large egg sales and a small taxable side business can therefore cross the limit sooner than expected.

When a Poultry Farmer Should Register for GST

  • You sell frozen, processed or branded and packaged poultry products and your taxable turnover crosses ₹40 lakh.
  • You run a trading business in feed, medicines or farm equipment alongside the farm.
  • You sell through an e-commerce platform that requires a GSTIN for your category.
  • You supply taxable goods to other states, where registration is generally required.
  • A buyer, bank or tender requires a GST registration even though the law does not force you to register.

For how the turnover rules work for small sellers, read our guide on GST for small businesses.

Should You Register Voluntarily?

If you supply only exempt goods, registering is optional, and you should know the trade-off. A registered person making only exempt supplies cannot claim Input Tax Credit on purchases, and must issue a bill of supply instead of a tax invoice. Voluntary registration still helps when a buyer or lender asks for a GSTIN, when you plan to add taxable products soon, or when you want your business to look established to larger customers. Compare the cost in our GST registration fee guide before deciding.

Documents Needed to Register a Poultry Business

  • PAN and Aadhaar of the proprietor, partners or directors, with a photograph
  • Address proof of the farm or office: electricity bill, property tax receipt, or lease agreement with the owner's no-objection letter
  • Bank account proof, such as a cancelled cheque or passbook
  • Proof of constitution if registering as a firm or company

Individual farmers can follow our guide on GST registration for an individual proprietor, and farms run with partners can read GST registration for a partnership firm. For the full checklist, see our GST registration documents guide.

How to Decide and Register for GST as a Poultry Farmer — 5 Steps

1

List Everything You Sell

Write down every product and service, including eggs, birds, processed items, feed, manure and contract rearing income.

2

Check Exempt or Taxable

Find the HSN code for each item and confirm whether it is exempt or taxable under the current notifications.

3

Add Up Your Turnover

Total all sales, exempt and taxable, and compare with the ₹40 lakh limit if you make any taxable supply.

4

Register on the GST Portal

If registration is required or you choose it, apply with your PAN, Aadhaar, address proof and bank details, and track the ARN.

5

Invoice and File Correctly

Issue a bill of supply for exempt sales and a tax invoice for taxable sales, and file your returns on time.

Frequently Asked Questions — GST for Poultry Farming

Is GST registration required for poultry farming?

Not if you supply only exempt goods such as live poultry and fresh eggs, because persons dealing only in exempt supplies are not liable to register. Registration may be needed if you also make taxable supplies above the threshold or fall under a mandatory category.

Is GST applicable on the sale of eggs and live chickens?

Fresh eggs and live birds are generally exempt from GST. Frozen, processed or branded and packaged products may be taxable, so check the rate for each product before invoicing.

Does the agriculturist exemption apply to poultry farmers?

The agriculturist exemption covers produce from cultivation of land, and rearing poultry is not cultivation of land. A poultry farm is generally outside registration because its main products are exempt goods, not because of the agriculturist exemption.

Can a poultry farmer claim input tax credit?

Input tax credit is not available on purchases used for exempt supplies. If your business also makes taxable supplies, you can claim credit only on the portion of inputs used for those taxable supplies, subject to the rules.

When should a poultry farmer register for GST?

Register when your taxable turnover crosses ₹40 lakh, when you sell taxable products such as processed or branded items, when an e-commerce platform requires it, or when you choose to register voluntarily for buyers, banks or tenders.

What invoice should a registered poultry farmer issue for exempt goods?

A registered person who supplies exempt goods issues a bill of supply, not a tax invoice, and does not charge GST on it. Taxable products should be billed on a tax invoice with GST.

Is contract poultry farming for a company subject to GST?

Services of rearing birds for food or similar products are generally treated as exempt agricultural services. The exact treatment depends on the arrangement, so confirm it for your contract before deciding on registration.
