In short: an individual registers as a sole proprietor on the GST portal (gst.gov.in). You fill Part A with your PAN, mobile number and email to get a Temporary Reference Number, then complete Part B with business details, address, goods or services and documents. After verification with Aadhaar and an EVC or e-sign, you receive an ARN, and the officer then issues your GSTIN. The government charges no fee.
"Individual" here means a person running a business in their own name: a freelancer, consultant, trader, shopkeeper or online seller who has not formed a company, LLP or partnership. You use your own PAN, and the GSTIN is linked to it. If you are not sure whether you need to register, our guide on GST rules for small businesses explains the turnover limits.
| Your situation | Registration |
|---|---|
| Selling goods, turnover above ₹40 lakh | Mandatory. |
| Providing services, turnover above ₹20 lakh | Mandatory. |
| Selling on Amazon, Flipkart or other marketplaces | Generally required, as platforms ask for a GSTIN. |
| Supplying goods to other states | Generally required, subject to notified exemptions. |
| Below the limits with no such activity | Optional. You can register voluntarily to claim input tax credit and serve GST-registered buyers. |
Lower limits apply in some special category states. For the detailed paperwork list for sole owners, see our GST registration for individuals service page.
You can run the business from home if you provide supporting address proof. For the complete checklist, read our GST registration documents guide.

More than 50,000 customers have trusted us with GST registration and filing, many of them freelancers and small traders registering for the first time. We pick the right HSN or SAC code, check that your address proof matches the application, and handle any officer query, which are the points where individual applications most often get stuck. You can follow your application through our page on tracking GST status by ARN, and compare charges in our GST registration fee guide.

You need PAN, Aadhaar, a photograph, address proof of the business place, and bank account details. For rented premises, add a rent agreement and the owner's no-objection letter.
No. The GST portal charges no fee for registration. Any amount you pay is a professional fee for preparing and filing the application.
If the application is clean and Aadhaar authentication is done, approval is often quick, within a few working days. If the officer raises a query or orders verification, it can take longer. Our Silver plan delivers in 48–72 hours and Gold and Premium in 24 hours, subject to officer approval.
Yes. A home can be your principal place of business if you provide supporting proof such as an electricity bill, and a rent agreement with the owner's no-objection letter if the home is rented.
No. A sole proprietor uses their own personal PAN for GST registration. The GSTIN is linked to that PAN, and you can add a trade name for the business.
Small taxpayers can opt for the composition scheme if they meet the conditions, such as staying within the prescribed turnover limit and not making inter-state supplies of goods. It lowers the tax rate and compliance but does not allow Input Tax Credit, so check eligibility before choosing it.
