What Are the Requirements for GST Registration?

In short: you must be liable to register (by turnover or by the nature of your supplies, or you choose to register voluntarily), and you need PAN, Aadhaar, a photograph, proof of business constitution, proof of your business address, bank account proof, and a mobile number and email address for OTP. Companies and LLPs also need a digital signature. There is no government fee, and you should apply within 30 days of becoming liable.

GST registration has two kinds of requirements: eligibility (do you need to register at all?) and paperwork (what must you submit?). Most rejections and queries come from the second kind, such as an address proof that does not match the business name or a bank document that is unreadable. The sections below cover both so you can check yourself before applying.

Eligibility: Who Needs to Register for GST?

SituationRegistration requirement
Supplier of goodsRequired once aggregate turnover crosses ₹40 lakh in a financial year. Lower limits apply in some special category states.
Supplier of servicesRequired once aggregate turnover crosses ₹20 lakh. Lower limits apply in some special category states.
Inter-state supply of goodsGenerally required irrespective of turnover, subject to exemptions notified from time to time.
Selling through e-commerce platformsGenerally required, because marketplaces ask for a GSTIN before activating a seller account.
Casual or non-resident taxable personRequired before starting business, irrespective of turnover.
Liable to pay tax under reverse chargeRequired irrespective of turnover.
TDS or TCS deductors, input service distributors, online information and database access providersRequired irrespective of turnover.
Anyone below the limitsOptional. Voluntary registration lets you claim input tax credit and supply to registered buyers.

Address Proof Requirements

  • Owned premises: latest electricity bill, property tax receipt, or municipal khata copy.
  • Rented premises: a registered rent agreement, a no-objection letter from the owner, and the owner's electricity bill or property tax receipt.
  • Home office: accepted as the place of business with the same supporting proof as above.
  • Shared or co-working space: agreement with the space provider along with its address proof.

The proof should clearly show the full address that you enter on the application.

Other Practical Requirements

  • A valid mobile number and email address, because the portal sends OTPs to both during the first step.
  • Aadhaar authentication of the primary authorised signatory, which speeds up approval and may reduce the chance of physical verification.
  • Your HSN codes for goods or SAC codes for services, so the application describes your business correctly.
  • Bank account details, which can be submitted after registration within the period allowed by the rules.
  • An authorised signatory, with an appointment letter or resolution where the entity is not a sole proprietor.

How GST Registration Works — 5 Steps

1

Check Eligibility and Gather Documents

Confirm you must or wish to register, then collect PAN, Aadhaar, address proof, bank proof and constitution documents.

2

Fill Part A on the GST Portal

Enter PAN, mobile number and email, verify both by OTP, and receive a Temporary Reference Number.

3

Complete Part B and Upload Documents

Add business details, promoters, place of business, goods or services and bank details, then upload the supporting files.

4

Verify and Submit the Application

Sign with a digital signature, e-sign or EVC, then submit to generate the Application Reference Number.

5

Officer Review and GSTIN Issued

The officer verifies the application, may raise a query, and then approves it so the GSTIN and certificate are issued.

Common Reasons GST Applications Get Queries

  • Name or address on the proof does not match what is entered on the application.
  • Rent agreement without the owner's no-objection letter or ownership proof.
  • Blurry, cropped or oversized uploads that the portal cannot read.
  • Wrong HSN or SAC description for the actual business activity.
  • Authorised signatory details that differ from the PAN or Aadhaar records.

Frequently Asked Questions — GST Registration Requirements

What documents are required for GST registration?

You need PAN, Aadhaar, a photograph, proof of business address, bank account proof, and proof of constitution such as a partnership deed or certificate of incorporation. Companies and LLPs also need a digital signature and an authorised signatory letter or resolution.

Is there any government fee for GST registration?

No. The GST portal does not charge a fee for registration. Any amount you pay is a professional service charge for preparing and filing the application.

What is the turnover limit for GST registration?

Registration is generally required once aggregate turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services in a financial year. Lower limits apply in some special category states, and some businesses must register irrespective of turnover.

Can I register for GST using a home address?

Yes. A home can be your principal place of business if you provide supporting proof such as an electricity bill, and a rent agreement with the owner's no-objection letter if the home is rented.

Is Aadhaar mandatory for GST registration?

Aadhaar authentication of the authorised signatory is part of the standard process and helps speed up approval. Without it, the officer may ask for physical verification of the business premises.

How soon must I apply after becoming liable for GST?

You should apply within 30 days of the date on which you become liable to register. Delaying beyond that can lead to notices and penalties.

Can I get GST registration without crossing the turnover limit?

Yes. Voluntary registration is available to any business. It lets you collect GST, claim Input Tax Credit, and supply to buyers who require a GSTIN, but you must then follow the full return filing rules.
