Overview

What Is an FSSAI License for E-commerce/Online Food Sellers?

An FSSAI license for e-commerce or online food sellers is the food safety licence required by any business that sells, lists, delivers or facilitates the sale of food products through a digital platform — whether that's your own website or app, a marketplace like Amazon or Flipkart, or a food delivery platform like Swiggy or Zomato. FSSAI treats online food commerce as a distinct, higher-risk category because of its wide, cross-state reach, which is why the rules require these operators to hold a Central License rather than a State License or Basic Registration.

This applies whether or not you physically manufacture the food yourself — if your platform sells, stores or ships food to customers online, you are considered a Food Business Operator (FBO) under the Food Safety and Standards Act and must be licensed before you go live.

Central License applications need a bit more documentation than a State License. Keep these ready.

Business incorporation/registration certificate
Geo-tagged premises/warehouse address proof
Food Safety Management System (FSMS) plan

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Do online food sellers need an FSSAI license?

Yes. Any business that sells, lists, delivers or facilitates the sale of food products through a website, app or online marketplace is required to hold a valid FSSAI licence before operating.

Which FSSAI license category applies to e-commerce food sellers?

E-commerce food business operators are required to hold a Central FSSAI License, regardless of their annual turnover, under FSSAI's current rules.

Do I still need a Central License if my turnover is very low?

Yes. Unlike most other food businesses that qualify for Basic Registration or a State License based on turnover, e-commerce food operators must obtain a Central License irrespective of revenue.

Do I need a separate FSSAI license for each warehouse?

Yes. If you store or ship food through a fulfilment centre or third-party warehouse, that address must be declared as a place of storage, and in many cases a separate licence is needed for each location.

What is the difference between a marketplace platform and an individual seller under FSSAI rules?

The platform or aggregator itself must hold a Central License to operate. Individual sellers listed on that platform also need their own valid FSSAI registration or licence, based on their own turnover and business type.

How much does an FSSAI license for e-commerce/online food sellers cost?

Our service fee is ₹6,500/- for document preparation, filing and follow-up, plus the government Central License fee of ₹7,500 per year.

What documents are required for an e-commerce FSSAI license?

You'll typically need your PAN and Aadhaar card, Business Registration Certificate, geo-tagged premises or warehouse proof, a Food Safety Management System plan, a product recall plan, and your list of food categories.

How long does it take to get an FSSAI Central License for e-commerce?

A Central License application typically takes longer than a State License due to additional documentation and review, and timelines can vary depending on the completeness of your application and department queries.

Can Setupfiling handle the FoSCoS filing for me?

Yes, we handle document preparation, online filing on FoSCoS, responding to any department queries, and follow-up until your licence is issued.
