Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a simplified, unified tax system implemented in many countries to replace multiple indirect taxes. If your business’s annual turnover exceeds a certain threshold—typically ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in special category states)—you must register for GST. In this guide, you will learn how to register for GST online, the documents you need, step-by-step instructions, and helpful tips for a smooth, hassle-free experience.

What is GST and Why Do You Need It?

GST stands for Goods and Services Tax. It’s a tax you have to pay to the government when you sell goods or services. It replaced many old taxes like VAT, service tax, and excise duty, so now businesses just deal with one main tax: GST.

If your business earns more than ₹20 lakh a year (or ₹10 lakh in some special states), it’s mandatory to register for GST.

But even if you don’t cross that limit, registering for GST gives your business more credibility and allows you to claim tax credits.
