What is an HSN Code?

HSN stands for Harmonized System of Nomenclature. It is an internationally standardized classification system for goods, developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO) and used in over 200 countries.

In India, HSN codes are mandated under GST to uniformly classify goods on invoices, determine the correct tax rate, and ensure compliance with GSTR forms.

Every product sold in India has a unique HSN code — from food grains and chemicals to electronics and textiles. The code helps GST authorities verify the applicable tax slab.

2-Digit Code

4-Digit Code

6 & 8-Digit Code

Identifies the sub-heading & tariff item — most precise classification. Required for exports, imports, and high-turnover businesses.

What is a SAC Code?

SAC (Services Accounting Code) is the equivalent of HSN for services. Issued by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), SAC codes classify every type of service under GST.

All SAC codes are 6 digits and start with 99 (Chapter 99 covers all services). The next 4 digits describe the nature of the service.

Example: SAC code 995431 = Demolition Services
99 = Chapter (all services) | 54 = Construction services | 31 = Demolition
