Professional tax is a state-level tax, so the answer depends on where your business or employment is based. In states that levy it, registration is compulsory for employers and for professionals and businesses. Here's who must register, which registration you need, and what happens if you don't.

If your business, employees or profession are based in a state that charges it, you must register and pay. If your state does not levy professional tax, there is nothing to register.
Professional tax is charged by state governments under their own Acts, within the limit set by Article 276 of the Constitution, which caps it at ₹2,500 per person per year. Rates, salary slabs, due dates and forms differ from state to state.
An employer in a PT state must register, deduct professional tax from employees whose salary crosses the state's threshold, and deposit it with the state.
Doctors, lawyers, chartered accountants, consultants and other professionals practising in a PT state generally need to enrol and pay on their own account.
Proprietors, partnership firms and traders carrying on business in a PT state are usually covered, depending on that state's Act.
Private limited companies, LLPs and other entities with a place of business in a PT state typically register as employers and for directors or partners where the state requires it.
Many states issue two kinds of Professional Tax Registration. The names and rules vary, but the idea is the same.
| Aspect | PTRC (Registration Certificate) | PTEC (Enrolment Certificate) |
|---|---|---|
| Who needs it | Employers who deduct tax from employees' salaries | Professionals and business owners paying tax on their own account |
| Who pays | Employee bears the tax; employer deducts and deposits it | The person or business pays directly |
| Typical example | A company with salaried staff | A practising doctor, lawyer or consultant |
| Compliance | Periodic deposits and returns as per the state | Annual or periodic payment as per the state |
A business can need both, for example a firm with employees whose partners also pay professional tax in their own right. Exact requirements depend on your state.
Professional tax is commonly levied in states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Kerala, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, along with several north-eastern states and Puducherry. States and union territories such as Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan do not currently charge it.
Rates, slabs and applicability can change, and some states apply it only in specific areas. Always confirm your state's current position before assuming you are exempt. We check this for you when you apply.
States generally charge interest on professional tax that is paid late or not deposited on time.
Failing to register, not deducting tax from employees, or not filing returns can attract penalties under the state Act.
If the state assesses you later, you may have to pay the tax that was due for earlier periods, along with interest.
The employer is responsible for deducting and depositing the tax, so any default falls on the business, not the employee.
Missing registrations often surface during Statutory Audits, loan due diligence or investor checks.
Registering early is simpler than regularising several years of missed deductions and returns later.
PAN of the business, firm, company or proprietor applying for registration.
Certificate of incorporation, partnership deed, LLP agreement, GST Certificate or Shop Act licence, as applicable.
Rent agreement or ownership proof, plus a recent utility bill for the place of business.

A cancelled cheque or bank statement of the business account.

Yes, in every state that levies professional tax. It is a state tax, so registration is compulsory only where your state charges it, and not required where it does not.
It is commonly levied in states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, while states like Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan do not currently charge it.
Under Article 276 of the Constitution, professional tax cannot exceed ₹2,500 per person per year, though the actual amount depends on the state's slabs.
PTRC is the registration certificate for employers who deduct tax from employees' salaries, while PTEC is the enrolment certificate for professionals and business owners who pay the tax themselves.
Possibly. Self-employed professionals and business owners in a PT state may still need to enrol and pay on their own account, depending on the state's rules.
You can face interest on late payment, penalties under the state Act, and back-dated liability for earlier periods if the state assesses you later.
No, they are separate. GST is a central and state indirect tax, while professional tax is a state levy on professions, trades and employment, with its own registration.
Our professional fee is ₹1,499, plus the government fee applicable in your state, and it covers document preparation, application filing and issuance of the PT certificate.
