GST Registration for Amazon Seller: Overview

If you are planning to sell products on Amazon India, one of the most important things you need is GST registration. Whether you are a small business owner, a startup, or even someone starting from home, getting GST registration is a must to become a successful Amazon seller.

What is GST?

GST stands for Goods and Services Tax. It is a tax that the Indian government charges on the sale of goods and services. GST replaced many old taxes like VAT, Service Tax, and Excise Duty. Now, there is one single tax system called GST.

There are three types of GST:

  1. CGST – Central Goods and Services Tax
  2. SGST – State Goods and Services Tax
  3. IGST – Integrated Goods and Services Tax (for interstate transactions)

Why GST Registration is Important for Amazon Sellers?

Here are the main reasons why GST registration for Amazon seller is so important:

1. It is Mandatory

Amazon will not allow you to list your products without a valid GST number. This is one of the first steps to get started on the platform.

2. Helps in Legal Business Operations

Having a GST number makes your business legal and trusted. You can also open a business bank account, apply for business loans, and expand easily.

3. Input Tax Credit (ITC)

When you have a GST number, you can claim tax credit on the purchases you make. This saves money and increases your profit.

4. Required for Tax Filing

As a seller, you need to file monthly or quarterly GST returns. Without GST registration, you cannot do this, and it may lead to fines or penalties.

Who Needs GST Registration on Amazon?

If you sell any physical goods or taxable services on Amazon and your total turnover is more than ₹40 lakhs per year (₹20 lakhs for some states), you must register for GST.
